Door Opener.
(It’s technically two words but in my native language which is german it’s just one:”Türöffner”)
“A lot of my works usually point towards something, an experience which is universal to being human and I choose a material which intrigues me to work with for that specific project. A door opener can take many forms, through an aesthetic choice, through humour, a surprising element it makes sure the audience has a motivation to stay with it for a while. But it’s just that, a door opener. A good work of art for me is opening a space in which the viewer can enter and find something that is behind this first layer, something that might the true within him too. It might open up a space inside one’s own experience, memory or imagination, even if just for a second, that one can relate to. The door is never locked. It’s up to you if you wanna open it and look what’s behind but no one is gonna force you, and you can still enjoy looking at it for as long as you want. And if you revisit the same door a couple years later it might take you to a completely different room. That’s the magic of it.”
We have to see what we haven’t seen yet, visit again what we have seen already. Watch in spring what we’ve seen in summer. Watch during the day what we have seen in the night, with the sun where the first time was raining. The stone that hasn’t change position. We need to follow back to our steps and replicate them again, by blaze new paths. We need to restart the travel every time again. Jose Saramago
This is what is written on the back of a photograph I just came across… it could be a coincidence but it explains part of Ole Ukena’s concepts. Next to it, Ukena’s art philosophy embeds feelings, issues and contradictions that we face and reflect upon throughout different faces of our life. By encountering one of his artworks we could think for hours, minutes or only few seconds. Explore what our thoughts and perception are and maybe start an unexpected introspection. That’s what happened to me while looking at his “trust” and wisdom art.
Ole Ukena is a conceptual artist that stimulates our couriosity by creating artworks that deal with different themes all the time.
I am not limiting myself to one medium. I simply can’t. It’s a constant adventure, finding new materials in the countries in which I travel, encountering objects or phrases that can be transformed into specific, meaningful pieces. While my work often displays a strong conceptual nature, I am also very drawn to the intuitive. This balancing energy forces me to step out of my mind and just create. These forces are like my left and right hand. My works try to create a map of the human mind, in an attempt to tell a tale about the very nature of it with all its possibilities, limitations, irritations, and hopes.
He is the founder of CRE8 Foundation, Ole engages professional artists and kids worldwide to create collaborative artworks.
