Because I am amazed about how you can find the structures, the elements, the laws of nature everywhere, if you only dig deep enough. Because I am amazed about how complicated things can get when one diverges from those patterns. Because I am amazed about its splendering and mysterious beauty, once it is (re)(dis) covered. Mysterious beauty… this is what fascinates me in general and in Nick’s works. Honestly it’s a bit hard to express in words how impressive and inspiring his works, words and gesture are. He is using very simple and naturally interesting elements like stones, and makes artworks and incredible installations.
As we said he didn’t reinvent the wheel, but what he does, is to connect all the people around him. The audience stops for a moment and unconsciously focuses with him. It’s a magical moment where a comfortable enjoyable silence is dominating the scene. The audience itself stops for some seconds and becomes part of the momentum!
Nick is a very interesting thinker before being an artist… I watched his talk that he gave at Tedx. Although he feels embarrassed about it because he decided to not prepare the talk at all which afterwards he thought to be “stupid and naive and arrogant”. However, I think he is very honest and spontaneous, about topics that really interested him like reflecting upon the current trend of ‘thinking outside the box’. Rather than thinking outside the box as the creative industries are advertising and promoting, he would instead, stay inside the box itself.
Nick highlights how the boundaries of the box itself, could give us the freedom to dive into something and knowing it in depth. We need to stay inside in order to know how this ‘box’ looks like before finding the different ways to jump out.
Nick Steur graduated at the Theatre Academy in Maastricht (NL) as a ‘theatrical performer’.
Through live performance, installation and film I try to communicate. The works change on every new location, because a location also communicates I think it’s important that spectators become aware of the present, and their own presence in it.
He is now based nearby Maastricht & Liege and performing in different festivals. Check on his website where the must-see next performative installation will be.
