“I travel in my mind to the world I think I live in. Just as life itself, art is a journey to something you don’t know exists right now. There is so much to see in this world, and so little we actually see. Looking at the world around you as if it’s the first time you see it, makes you see different things every time. Open your eyes to the unexpected and find your own world.”
I agree with Nancy. Not all of us are so lucky to have the chance to follow a white rabbit and suddenly be thrown into a magic world like Alice in Wonderland. It is true that sometimes we just need to blink or change our perspective to see the world in a new fascinating way. We ought to try it!
Exploring it is also the concept beyond her graduation project.
Nancy’s focus is on mapping and mixing fantasy with reality. She got inspired by existing islands around the globe and created through her vision, surreal pieces of lands. These ‘no man’s lands’ are magic… they are the only places where we can all meet; everyone is welcome to stay as much as they want and enjoy all the others inhabitants.
Nancy North is an interesting person to talk to. She graduated from the Abkm in Maastricht last year and currently her artworks are delighting the walls of our office and our eyes.
Nancy considers her visual expression a combination of graphic and visual art. For sure her works allow us for few minutes to take a distance from this reality and travel, at least with our imagination, in the ‘perfect’ world we would like to live in.
