UR.
“UR is a German prefix
UR expresses a gain; very …
UR said: from the ground up, through and through.
UR Identifies someone or something as a starting point, as far back, as in the beginning.
UR Identifies the first.
UR refers to kinship and belonging to previous generations
UR is the name for the most important game animals of the European people, the aurochs.”
U R is just how you feel now; it is the starting point to be in our world, a pivotal way of being.
Each line one breath… this is the title of John’s last series of freehand drawings which focuses on “an artistic and graphic interpretation of evolution through the use of simple draw lines”.
Intriguing drawings that ask you to stop, think and breath. Honestly, when I saw it for the first time I was really impressed by patience and calm that John has. Some of his artworks are very big! Drawing freehand an infinite numbers of lines in a desolate corner of the art room was the punishment that my art teacher was used to give to ‘undisciplined’ students. Luckily I had the ‘pleasure’ to do it only once!
John’s lines embed a beautiful meaning. Each trace of ink coincides with the most basic and transcendental state of life, the perception of breathing.
“Starting with a straight line, I draw each following sequence by copying the character of the previous. I concentrate on breathing and focus on drawing the successor. Again and once more. Again and again. In the process of drawing, my lines evolve into a kind of logarithmic pattern and layering, steered merely by aberrance’s and anomalies of human failure in contrast to the precision of a machine. The resulting artworks are reminiscent of a wave-motion-pattern transporting energy through space-time, such as any electromagnetic wave, or the pattern of a DNA-replication. Lines and layers are like a primordial code or anatomic pattern assembling, arranging and composing the manifestation of energy and matter.”
John Franzen is an artist who believes in the need for diversity and interaction with others, aiming for aesthetic perfection with meaning. He lives and works in Maastricht, The Netherlands
His new exhibition UR II is open until 24th of March. If you haven’t been there yet, take your time to enjoy his work!
“Any kind of an existence to me is the materialized conclusion of very basic forces.”
