About the work
How do you build something on loose ground? For De Weerd, it’s all about that question: How do you look at a world that keeps hiding itself behind itself? He explores that by working from the dynamics and structures of painting itself: the material and preconditions are the starting point in this – to build up the image from there, shakily. Over and over again. Like inhabiting a dilapidated house that you are constantly, then here – then there again, shoring it up, rebuilding it.
De Weerd started making monotypes after reading ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ by James Joyce. In conversation with a classmate, the protagonist sets out his personal aesthetic theory: “It is clear that the image is somewhere between the mind and senses of the artist himself and the mind and senses of others. If you keep this in mind, you will see that art necessarily divides into three forms, flowing from one into the other. These forms are: the lyrical form, the form in which the artist presents his image in immediate relation to himself; the epic form, the form in which he presents his image in mediating relation to himself and to others; the dramatic form, the form in which he presents his image in immediate relation to others.”
For de Weerd, monotypes are paintings in a compressed time. “I use the technique of the monotype in a painterly way. The sheet rolls out of the press, you put another sheet on that, then a stencil is created, and then you put the negative back on another sheet. “
This method of working is like a wandering walk. There is the same kind of progression in which one thing transitions to another.
For de Weerd, painting is the starting point for these walks, or wanderings as he himself calls them. From his studio, in addition to the paintings that form the core of his oeuvre, he also tries to literally blend this method in video performances, installations in nature and bicycle rides (with a printing press on the luggage carrier). Looking for new paths over old paths.
