About the book

This publication is part of the long-term project: ‘The Garden Journal’. It is the result of a research into the meteorological and astronomical calendar of the seasons. With this project Sanne wants to zoom in on the processes of change that take place during a year in various gardens. For example; the change of color, the disappearance of flora or the scents associated with the passage of the seasons. To capture these processes of change, she would like to ask several gardeners to note specific phenomena that take place in their gardens. For each of these phenomena she will develop a publication that can be used as a journal to capture the developments in their garden.

The first phenomenon is color, and in this journal gardeners can outline the colors that are visible in their garden each month. This publication came into being during and thanks to the project Bodemleven, by platform_dis and bodemzicht_farm_

IMPORTANT NOTE: With this publication it’s possible to participate in the development of an alternative calendar by observing the colours of a landscape over one year.

When we learn to observe a landscape, it can act as a time-keeper and navigation system. A landscape essentially consists of “constant change,” which you could read as a clock, calendar and map. By watching stars, the flight of a bird or the mosses on a tree, you can navigate through a landscape. In addition, by observing and reading natural elements, such as ebb and flow, changes in colour, texture, shape and volume of flora or social behaviours of fauna, time can be determined.
This publication focuses on the colours of trees, herbs, bushes, grasses, flowers and weeds to learn how to read time according to the colours of a landscape.
