About the pieces:
MENINO REI
Sankofa is one of the ancestral wisdom that make up the Andinkra symbols, which represents the sacred African bird with its look to the back. The symbol talks of searching for our origins and the need to go back to the past to learn from it. It is about rescuing memories that were buried and knowledge that was denied to us for a long time in order to rebuild our ancestral ties. In this work I present the Boy King, a Black child formed by the heritage of his people. An inheritance that is not based on money but instead on the strength of the memories passed orally and the knowledge about himself and his origin.
GUIANÇA
With the Ori* protected and guarded, walking a path guided by great warriors, with the strength of the storm, the lightness of the butterfly and the bravery of a buffalo. Our shield is his sword, loaded with all ancestral connection and strength. Give us guidance and protection to continue opening the paths for our people to pass and be able to dream
*Ori is one of the Orixás (divine spirits) from the Yoruba religion of West Africa and several religions of the African diaspora that derive from it. Ori means “head” in Yoruba and it represents spiritual intuition and destiny.
ESCOLA DE RECONQUISTA
What education shall we build for our children? How can we contribute to the formation of autonomous, sensitive, critical-thinking individuals who are knowledgeable of their history and not mere reproducers of the dysfunctions of this system? For this work, I depict two children on their way to school and this school is a huge Baobab. A centuries-old African tree, a guardian of the meanings and stories of Black people and a symbol of ancestry; It was there that the Griôs masters orally passed on the knowledge and practices of their people from generation to generation. And, in that way, they kept alive in the minds and hearts of children and the community all the greatness that forms us. May we continue to build a better world with education as the basis for this construction.
COM DOIS TE BOTARAM, COM TRÊS EU TIRO
Greetings and blessings to the old black women and men, who represent our ancestry and African roots. They are Great Griô masters who resisted and cleared the paths for us to be here today and continue guiding and protecting us in the spiritual realm. In the work, I present an old black man with his pipe lit and all his ancestral wisdom, bringing strength, love, consolation, healing, lightness, patience and tranquillity to humanity from Aruanda (a place in the spirit world).
BENÇÃO VÓ
“I bless you, I save you, I heal you. Long live the strength of the faith healers; great teachers and counsellors who, with the power of medicinal herbs and prayer, act in favour of the good of the body, mind and soul.”
CONEXÃO ANCESTRAL
“The voice of my daughter gathers within itself, speech and action. Yesterday – today – now. In my daughter’s voice, the resonance will be heard. The echo of freedom-life.” (excerpt from the poem Women Voices by Conceição Evaristo).
This work is a tribute to the courage, lightness and lovingness of our existence as women and that of our ancestors; a tribute to the strength of the women who have historically been a source of resistance, struggle, support, care, protection, affection and strength.
About the artist:
Rusha is a black Brazilian visual artist, art educator, cultural producer, activist in the black movement, and advocate for land and territory rights. Researcher of ethnic-racial relations, visual culture, and decoloniality. Her artistic research explores issues surrounding ancestry, memory, identity, spirituality, resistance, and black symbology.
