OPEN CALL: Artist Residency for Artists with Parental Responsibilities – Munich

Two-week residency with mentoring at Halle 6 and final presentation at HABIBI Kiosk.

Description

This two-week residency is aimed at visual artists with parental responsibilities who live in Munich or elsewhere in Europe. It offers a flexible, supportive programme specifically designed to respond to the needs and realities of artist-parents.

This residency—considered the first of its kind in Munich—combines individual mentoring, studio visits, and a public final presentation.

The aim is to give artists the opportunity to develop, deepen, or initiate an artistic or research-based project within two weeks, supported by tailored guidance, conversations, and encounters with cultural professionals.

Selected participants will receive individual and group mentoring from experienced professionals (Sascia Bailer, Heike Dempster & Nir Altman), as well as professional workshops that will support them with revising their portfolio and artist statement and drafting their professional objectives for the upcoming years. .

The programme concludes with a public final presentation at HABIBI Kiosk. In addition, an online presentation and open digital studio will be offered to make the results accessible to a wider, international audience.

Residency Periods

• First session: 2–17 March 2026
• Second session: 18–31 March 2026

Exact mentoring dates will be scheduled after the selection process, in coordination with the mentors and curators.

Artists based in Munich will share the studio with international participants but will sleep at home and will not be required to work on weekends.

The International Artists will have a doable room in a shared apartment with other artists at HALLE 6. The room is big enough for a family to come and the organisation will make sure it´s safe for children and all the age-related facilities for children will be there. The Artists chosen could decide to come alone or with the kids and person who can look after them. 

Residency Highlights

• Duration: 2 weeks, part-time and flexible (First Session 2–17 March 2026 Second session: 18–31 March 2026 )
• Mentoring: Professional guidance to support the development of artistic practice
• Final presentation: Public presentation at HABIBI Kiosk, Munich (and online)
• Artist fee: €650 for the duration of the residency (incl. VAT)
• Production budget: €400 per artist
• Parental support allowance: €600 for the duration of the residency
• Studio: Shared studio space at Halle 6
• International artists: Private doable room in shared accommodation at Halle 6 (with space for a partner or caring person & child)
• Travel budget A/R: €350

Expectations of Participants

Selected artist-parents are expected to participate in the scheduled activities as agreed in their individual timetable and to realise their project/research within the defined residency period.

Selection Process and Jury

Applications must be submitted via the online form and include a clear, feasible project or research proposal, outlining objectives and a realistic timeline.

A following jury will select four artist-parents ( 2 based in Munich, and 2 based in Europe):

• Mirthe Berentsen – Artist, Writer, Journalist, Mother

The jury commit to select a diverse representation of artists in terms of background, gender, age, artistic practice, and perspectives. All applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

• Quality
• Feasibility
• Motivation
• Supporting ecosystem selection: Artists are selected not only individually, but also for the ways their distinct practices can intersect, challenge, and strengthen one another within the residency framework
