Join artist Stef Lemmens on the 19th April, and give new meanings to hate speech online.

In the context of The Burnout Society – an exhibition taking place at PontArte Gallery in Maastricht, that reflects on the demands of Society, and the way they influence new generations thanks to the perspectives of young artists in the Euregio, artist Stef Lemmens will guide you to reframe hate speech.

A workshop by artist Stef Lemmens, at PontArte Gallery in Maastricht

“Within this workshop participants will dive head first into the online stream of hate speech. By using the technique of blackout poetry on these digital messages, participants are suddenly able to transform their initial frustration into an act of resistance. They don’t participate with, nor do they ignore the hate they see. They simply use the writers words against themselves, elevating them to something beautiful. Next we post this new text under the original comment, resulting ina digital check-mate. The original emotions are still present in these manipulated texts, but they become more suggestive and less short sighted, making it possible to carry more meaning. With this workshop I want to show that hate should not be fougth with more hate, nor should it be ignored. Instead we can use it as a strength.” (Stef Lemmens)

Stef Lemmens researches human inclinations which we sometimes find difficult to embrace or recognise as part of our everyday lives. From influencers content on social media, the intangibility of online hate speech, the tendency to be alienated from our fellow humans, to the absurd choice of outstanding debt to live in enormous houses. Each work originates from the conflict between the artist and these points, which he experiences as problematic. Each time a new method is constructed in which he appropriates the inclinations to explore what other meanings they can have for Society. The work becomes a detour for connection, a starting point for a dialogue or an invitation for self-reflection. For Stef the power of his work lies in its public context, in both the digital and the physical world. He drags and sneaks his works in the streets, museums, or on digital platforms, in an attempt to allow everyone to interact with them and pierce the static character of an artwork.

‘The Burnout Society’ is an exhibition, taking place from the 5th to the 21st of April, that reflects on the demands of Society, and the way they influence new generations, thanks to the perspectives of young artists in the Euregio.

Featuring works by Sara Bachour, Elisa Verkoelen, Milena Dahl & Stef Lemmens, this exhibition highlights the unhealthy dynamics of our Society. The works of the artists acts as a starting point, to think about the infinite sea of possibilities which affects so many of us.

This exhibition is part of an experimental project, possible thanks to the support of the Province of Limburg, developed to support emerging artists entering the commercial art world. It is a cooperation between The Artist and the Others and Marieke Severens, from PontArte Gallery in Maastricht.
