Can artists also be considered digital nomads?

What are the specific possibilities, obstacles and resources out there for artists who are interested in travelling for their work and research? What are the options for nomadic artists today? How can they make the best use of international opportunities in a sustainable and feasible way?

In the contemporary art scene, the integration of travel in the development of a sustainable career is not only a very attractive opportunity for artists worldwide; it has become essential. However international travel has a high cost. Artists and arts professionals – are often not paid adequately (or not at all). Covering transportation, accommodation, developing a network and finding opportunities in different places is not easy, especially when resources are limited.

On the 17th of June, our Head of Projects, independent curator and jury member Jessica Capra will open a discussion ‘Art on the Move: Artists as Digital Nomads’ as part of the 2023 Zagreb conference for digital nomads, drawing a parallel and shining light on the world of freelance work and international or nomadic opportunities for artists.

Jessica Capra will share her experience as a cultural professional with ten years of experience working in culture and supporting artists in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, Turkey and Italy. She initiates and develops cultural projects based on needs, created to make a change, often focusing on developing between artists and cultural professionals across borders. How can we support artists to travel in the early stages of their careers? Can we connect, stimulate international dialogue, keep the environment in mind, and encourage the development of a fair and sustainable practice?

Jessica Capra is a cultural professional with ten years of experience of working in culture and supporting artists in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, Turkey and Italy. She initiates and develops cultural projects based on needs, created to make a change. She works for and with artists and cultural professionals.
The pillars of every project she develops are: the promotion of shared knowledge, the need to connect people, enhance skills and start new collaborations that can create value for the current cultural situation. Her passion for motivating, empowering and advising others, especially young cultural professionals and artists, led her to the creation of The Artist and The Others. This Foundation, based in Maastricht & Munich, provides artists with the knowledge, skills and connections they need to develop their careers while working with European partnerships.
