D!NG at Kunst tour Maastricht: The Outsiders

DING_banner_KT

For the 2015 edition of the Kunsttour Maastricht The Artist and the Others asked young artist and curator Jolien Dirix of Ding magazine to present never-shown-before-in-Limburg artists.

With this initiatives The Artist and the others presents talented artists from Europe in Maastricht and promote the talent of Jolien Dirix (BE), professionals we already worked with and with whom we developed a trustable and genuine relation… the way we love to work, create and support talent. Surrounded by the bright atmosphere of the De Brandweer you have the chance to discover and enjoy artworks by 4 young artists:

Cindy Bakker

“Transformation –doubt – imagination – isolation – reparation
Salad spinner, cooling elements, fly swatter, washing machines, rolling pin, fish floats, pancake pans, vacuum-cleaner bags, bicycle saddle, toilet brushes, lamp holders.

Everyday objects are usually used as functional and practical objects. Indispensible in everyday life, but moreover replaceable. We often replace these objects for newer and better versions.
My work is about that specific transformation of all these banal utensils. I started collecting all these object before they were thrown away. I really get inspiration out of my collection, because they often lack a certain character and imagination.
I try to find back their imagination through that transformation. For example sometimes I dismantle the objects. I try to show my audience that you can endlessly work on these objects and that their not just rubbish that you have to throw away after some time.”

Kenny Dunkan

Kenny Dunkan completed his studies in Paris, at The École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (also known as Arts Decos’, Ecole des Arts Decoratif) in 2014.
“Experimentation and a hijacking of the conventional are the basis of his artistic research. For Dunkan, excitement in the banal and everyday is an intense moment of realization, whether it’s the shelves of a crowded bazaar or the utility of a hardware store. Around the next aisle, the surprise of a tank filled with glittering metal nuts or a golden roll of house-insulation sheeting launch the next creative process. We know for sure that the work of Dunkan will take you into his magic, mysticism, and the surreal world.”

Laure Foret

Laure Forêt(1984) was born in Mayenne, France and currently lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. She has studied at the European School of Arts in Bretagne, France and the Sint Lucas College of Arts in Antwerp. She has had several exhibitions in Belgium and France.

“The skin is a membrane that covers the body and delimits it. It is a space where time, personal history and emotions arise. The skin does not always show what it wants or needs to be. It becomes another one who we cannot always control and in worst case even someone we have to fight against. Sometimes it appears someone does not feel comfortable in his or her skin. Then you can cope with that in many ways, like pushing your body to extreme limits or reconstructing it to new standards. Laure tries to cope with these thoughts and feeling by using arts and drawing and so to say she creates her own outer skin that feels comfortable and right in every single way. ”
