Call for creators: Nieuwe Uitzichten
Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo and Odapark in Venray are inviting artists, designers, and architects to participate in ‘Nieuwe Uitzichten’ (New Views). This project has room for eight creators to develop and execute a proposal that will contribute to the greening of our environment. Nieuwe Uitzichten will take place between July 2021 and September 2022.
Goal:
Climate adaption and sustainability challenges require us to look at our environment in a different way. Greening plays a part in this in many different ways. More room for flora combats the stress of heat, retains water during downpours, collects fine-particle emissions, and encourages biodiversity. Furthermore, having various types of flora in neighbourhoods is very beneficial to relaxation and general well-being.
Issue:
Nieuwe Uitzichten is aimed at developing new ways of integrating nature in our direct environment. How can plants and trees be incorporated in a crowded inner city, on a parking lot, or in an industrial environment? And how do you get inhabitants, visitors, or entrepreneurs involved with this new type of nature? With this project, we want to visualise the possibilities, to try out new ways of working, and to provide inspiration for the future.
Opportunities:
The issue of greening an environment can lead to a connection with other issues and developments. For instance:

Call for applications!
Do you, as a creative professional, want to contribute and tackle this issue? Sign up before 18 April 2021 via nieuweuitzichten@vanbommelvandam.nl. We aren’t expecting fully written out proposals, but we would like to see a first set-up which includes:
museum van Bommel van Dam Call voor makers: Nieuwe Uitzichten
- A motivation
- An explanation of your working method andt he way in which your thinking relates to your working practice
- If relevant for the assessment, please also include a portfolio or a short CV(max.2A4).
Participation is possible for creative professionals in the broadest sense: visual artists (all disciplines), designers, social designers, architects, and multidisciplinary teams. Graduating from one of the academies surrounding North Limburg (Maastricht, Düsseldorf, Essen, Cologne, Arnhem, Den Bosch, and Eindhoven) or having a connection with the Euregion around North Limburg for another reason is a plus.
Selection:
The entries will be judged by the project managers from museum van Bommel van Dam and Odapark Venray. The following criteria will be part of the judging process:
• Degreetowhichtheconceptfitsinwiththetaskandappealstotheimagination
• Degreetowhichtheworkingmethodmatchestheassignment• A connection to the Euregion surrounding North Limburg
Based on these criteria, about twenty participants will be invited to an online meeting. They will be asked to prepare a short pitch in which they will present their first concept, a sketch proposal, or a working process. After this we will start the discussion. In addition to the project managers, two external partners are present at the pitch. They jointly select the eight creators who will take part in the entire Nieuwe Uitzichten project. Fee for the pitch is €150 (excl. VAT).
Continuation:
Process stages and honorarium
There will be an extensive briefing in June 2021. Between July 2012 and July 2022, participants will look at a specific location in North Limburg where they will conduct their first research, will contact the people involved, and then gradually work towards a project proposal. This project proposal will be realised in September 2022. An honorarium of €8000 (excl. VAT), plus an implementation budget of €11,500 (excl. VAT), per participant will be available for the entire process.
Workspace:
Every creator will be asked to, for the duration of the project, use the ‘Artist in residence’ workshop at museum van Bommel van Dam for six continuing weeks. This is publicly accessible and can be used to do research, test ideas, collect input, or to realise small presentations. Furthermore, one of the creators will be able to use the ‘Kunstlab’ (Art lab) in Venray. Unlike the workshop in museum van Bommel van Dam, Kunstlab is also suitable for overnight stays.
Workshops and exchange:
Participants of the project can join the talent development project of the Borderland Residencies. These eleven Euregion locations in the area surrounding North Limburg organise a programme museum van Bommel van Dam Call voor makers: Nieuwe Uitzichten, consisting of workshops and master classes in which several different aspects of practical art will be discussed. It’s also a way of meeting other creators, curators, and organisations.
Feedback and advice
There will be multiple feedback moments during the concept development and the execution of the project proposal. Interested parties from locations such as the municipalities of Venlo and Venray will be present during these moments, as well as experts from the sustainability, green innovation, and landscaping industry. The collaborating parties will think along, give feedback and advice, and are willing to share their network with the participants.
Desired result
With Nieuwe Uitzichten we are working towards physical interventions in the public space that will be visible for at least three weeks. The projects will be connected through walking and cycling routes that will start at either museum van Bommel van Dam or Odapark. We are interested in projects that have a lasting impact and have the potential to continue after the project is completed. Creating support among those involved is important in this respect.
