The Academie voor beeldende Kunsten (ABKM) is part of Hogeschool Zuyd. It focuses on the disciplines fine arts, design, architecture, communication and education, which are connected to the basic principles of ABKM: creating, thinking, doing and reflecting.
The current building from 1962, has been extended by Architect Wiel Arets and consists of two parts, connected by a bridge crossing the Herdenkingsplein. The main building with the entrance houses the library, an auditorium, the mensa and a roofterras as well as several classrooms and offices. Walking over the bridge you will reach the second building with a vast space comprising studios and workshops for the students. The whole complex is characterised by its sober style with frequent use of plain grey concrete, glass brick walls and black steel. Basically, the building is a total contrast to the typical ‘classic’ image many have of an arts school.
