BOTH HATS ON: MEETUP & RIDER FOR ARTIST-PARENTS

On Friday October the 30th, join us for a special meet-up that brings artist-parents in The Netherlands together to talk challenges, share best practices, and build community and within the workshop we will start drafting a rider naming the working conditions artist-parents need to do their work and raise their children.

Becoming a parent while sustaining a life as an artist raises questions rarely addressed in the spaces where we talk about artistic practice, labour, or care. How do you keep working when studios, residencies, funding schemes, and rehearsal spaces were never built with parenthood in mind, as Lucy Jones addresses in her book Matrescence? What do fair working conditions even mean, when unpaid care work is so often invisible in how we plan, budget, and negotiate our practice?

Bring your questions, your experience, and, if needed, your child. This is the beginning of a conversation we hope continues well beyond one morning

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE CAREER IN THE ARTS?

A sustainable artistic practice is one you can maintain in the long term, evaluating carefully which opportunity you should focus on.

This doesn’t necessarily mean being able to live off art alone, but it does mean learning how to maximise your opportunities, how to create a sustainable workflow of projects, and how to include the topic of care (and self-care) in it.

Learning how to navigate the artworld(s), having a strong professional backbone of knowledge, skills and connections, and also learning how to build, and maintain, a supportive network, are the key. To create a sustainable practice you need to learn the best way to present yourself, how to strengthen your applications, where to turn for subsidies, but also how to make the most of different opportunities, exhibitions and artist residencies.
